The family has been stocking up on basics like beans, rice, lentils, peas, etc.. and this weekend we decided it was time to put them in long term storage. We first sat pregnant mom in a chair and let her have some nutrition for energy. She needed it.
Giving Mom some nutrition
We gathered together all our supplies:
Bringing Up the Supplies
We had more rice and beans here than our local walmart normally has on the shelf on any given day.
Food to store
Food Grade
storage buckets with lids
Food Grade Mylar Bags
Heat Sealing Wand
-It’s important to get out as much air as possible before sealing the mylar bags.
Permanent Marker
We had an assembly line going with Hubby and I and daughter and son-in-law all working together to get the job done. It was actually a lot of fun and went quickly this way. Other than the food and markers we ordered all our supplies online and they shipped really fast so we could be ready for this day.
We managed to fill about 15 buckets of rice, lentils, pinto beans, red kidney beans, split peas, lima beans, wheat, and a few others. And another five buckets a couple of days later. The oxygen absorbers come in packages of ten and you must use them as soon as possible or try to reseal them air tight so that they stay working. Which is why we decided to go ahead and fill the extra buckets now.
Many sites recommend storing enough food for a 3 month supply and others recommend storing a years supply. I think the point is to get started and do what you can, when you can. Doing this along with a selection of canned goods and necessities to rotate out and a good supply of water should take care of all our basic needs.
Where to get information:
How long will they last in storage? Most of these will have a recommended shelf life of 2-15 years stored this way and probably longer depending on what is stored. Of course we will be rotating it out replenishing it to keep our stock fresh as we go. We still have to stock up on basics like salt, sugar, dry milk, etc.. so there is lots of work yet to do. It’s rather comforting to know that we have this on hand to feed the family should an emergency happen. What are your thoughts?
